Mount Davidson (W6/NC-423) SOTA Activation

On October 31, 2015, I visited Mount Davidson in San Francisco. This is the highest natural point in the city and it is the home of a giant concrete cross famously featured in the film Dirty Harry. The summit is at an elevation of 928′ and is worth one SOTA point.

After parking in the surrounding neighborhood, it was a very short hike (less than one mile) to the peak. Again, I used a Yaesu FT-60R with a handheld 3-element 2m Yagi to make these contacts. Many curious dog walkers, bikers, and joggers asked questions about my very conspicuous Yagi! All in all, it was a nice, quick trip to the city.

2m QSOs: K6BMC, W4NJK, AF6JP, KJ6OG.

  1. The kids and I took the 43 to the edge of the mountain yesterday, and then hiked the rest of the way up. Made our first DX contact with Japan. That was the only QSO of the day, but it was a pretty fun one.

    1. Fantastic! The bands have been really hot lately, so I bet you would get more DX if you tried again this summer 🙂

      1. Wow! You are correct about band conditions this summer! The—now 13, 11, and 9 year-old—gang and I are out on our annual camping trip and have talked to Japan, and for the first time, Australia and Columbia! From Great Basin National Park, we had our fourth QSO with JG0AWE, (made two SOTA QSOs with him last year from that area at about this time), and our first QSO with JJ2JQF, (KO6BTY, the 13 year-old made that one.) Two stops later, from San Juan National Forest over in Colorado we contacted VK3YV, JR2IUB, and HK4KM all in sixteen minutes!
